Absolute rotary encoders are also called absolute value encoders. In contrast to incremental encoders, these absolute encoders have a unique digital code (binary, grey or grey-excess code). This allows each angular position to be assigned a unique value, so no initial calibration is necessary. The absolute position remains, even after a power failure or switching off.

Single-turn encoders have a measuring range of 360 degrees (one revolution). In contrast to incremental encoders, there is a wide variety of interfaces: parallel, SSI, Canopen, CAN SAEJ1939, RS485, Profibus, Profinet, Ethercat, Biss-C and analogue output.
